Scaling Clean Podcast

Episode 62: Nico Johnson, Host of Suncast, on What a Thousand Conversations Taught Him About Clean Energy Leadership

August 28, 2026

Scaling Clean: Nico Johnson, Creator and Host of Suncast

For this episode of Scaling Clean, I turned the tables and put Nico Johnson, creator and host of the Suncast podcast, in the guest chair.

Nico has spent more than a decade talking with nearly 1,000 clean energy executives. Before launching Suncast, he spent years in business development at Trina Solar and Conergy, working across the Americas. That combination of operating experience and a decade of conversations gives him a vantage point few people in this industry have, which is the ability to see patterns across hundreds of conversations with clean energy executives.

Here are a few takeaways from our conversation.

The story lags behind the company

Nico noticed that companies find an early narrative that works. It helps them land investors, close first customers, and build early momentum. But then, they keep repeating it, long after the product has evolved, the customer base has shifted, and the goals of the business have changed.

Nico says he can often sense when a founder is telling a "trailing indicator" version of their story, one that made sense a year or two ago but doesn't reflect where the company actually is today.

Build a story bank, not a single pitch

Nico argues that most companies only have one pitch, and it's usually the one built for investors, because that's the call CEOs take most often while fundraising. But investors, customers, government officials, and partners all want to hear something different.

His recommendation is to build what he calls a "story bank," or a set of messages tailored to each stakeholder group, built around the underlying question of what you want that audience to remember after they walk away from a conversation with you.

He credited a former boss and mentor, Mark Kingsley, with a line that stuck with him: "If you can learn how your customer makes money and help them make more of it, they'll keep you around."

Podcasts are a personal brand and investor-readiness strategy

Nico believes every CEO and founder should have a podcast guesting strategy on their radar. Being interviewed is a low-stakes way to practice and sharpen executive communication, and it builds what he calls a "trust ledger."

Investors look for a company's presence in multiple places before they ever take a meeting. Being a guest on a podcast is one of the most efficient ways to build that presence, since AI search now surfaces interviews the same way it surfaces articles.

Nico's philosophy is that "revenue is downstream of trust," and trust gets built by showing up.

Why This Conversation Matters

Nico's perspective, built from nearly a thousand conversations with clean energy leaders, offers a rare outside-in view of an industry that's often too close to its own story to see it clearly.

A few reflections from our conversation:

  • Companies should regularly check whether the story they're telling still matches the company they've become.
  • A single pitch isn't enough. The best communicators tailor their message to investors, customers, government agencies, and partners.
  • Personal brand and podcast guesting are becoming core parts of investor readiness and industry credibility.
