With this morning's news that Al Qaeda leader and 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden has been killed by U.S. special operations forces, first and foremost we wanted to say "thank you" to America's troops around the world. In particular, our deepest gratitude to those who have served in Afghanistan and, of course, in the "Seal Team 6" that carried out the operation against bin Laden. The valor that they displayed in this operation represents the very best of America.
Second, we would like to point out that Osama bin Laden came from oil-rich Saudi Arabia, and specifically from a family whose construction company has grown rich off of Saudi oil money. In large part, bin Laden's operations over the years have been financed by that money, which in turn flows from the stranglehold Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern oil exporters have on the United States and other western nations. Even putting aside all the other strong reasons - economic, environmental, etc. - to switch to a clean energy economy, cutting off the flow of oil money to despotic regimes and terrorist groups like Al Qaeda should make this an urgent, top-priority focus of Congress and the White House.
Bottom line: as the events of the past 24 hours remind us, there are real consequences to our "oil addiction." Now, more than ever, let's dedicate ourselves to moving on to clean, safe, American forms of energy that don't spill, blow up, or fuel regimes and movements that seek our demise.
